Experience & communication design: courses at CSM

As a qualified tutor in art and design, I gladly develop and teach courses in experience-, graphic-, and information design.
Since 2012, I’ve prepared and led several short courses at Central Saint Martins, University of the Arts London.

Experience Design: Narrative (weekend)

This multidisciplinary course explored the ways that narrative can be used as a tool to engage, explain, teach and inspire across a wide range of practices.

During this weekend class, created in collaboration with Susanne Buck, the participants discussed narrative theory and structure, and put it into practice — in site specific interventions around London’s Kings Cross.

Information Design: London Barcelona (summer school)

I taught Information Design Summer School in 2015. This course gave the students an opportunity to learn the principles of information design in a setting of two cities: London and Barcelona.

I created and delivered the London-based portion of the course, at Central Saint Martins. Format? Hands-on data gathering, and using this same data to tackle design challenges. After the first two introductory weeks in London, the participants applied their Information design knowledge in the second part of the course — in Barcelona’s Elisava.

This course was as a part of CSM Dual City programme.

Designing Presentations (weekend)

This weekend course focused on delivering impactful presentations using broadly available software. Through a mix of short lectures and hands-on activities, the participants crafted structured layout templates and formatting styles. And critically applied the principles of information design and storytelling to slides or handouts.

Graphic Design: Beginners & Intermediate

These computer-free short courses introduced graphic design in a hands-on manner.

The Beginners course focused on the fundamentals (color, composition, layout, typography, history), as well as the basics of e.g. data visualisation or visual identity design — with an emphasis on critical thinking.
The Intermediate course took this knowledge forward into visual research and experimentation or e.g. the basics of interface design — while still away from the digital screen.
In connection to these courses, I also gave portfolio consultations in graphic communication

The courses now

In my personal reflection, the open nature of these courses has brought together wonderful participants from various professional fields and backgrounds. It’s been a privilege to work with them and see the incredible results of connecting graphic design with cross-discipline sensibilities and thinking.

Because of my involvement in multiple projects, I haven’t been teaching regular classes since 2017.
Feel free to get in touch with me if you have questions.
Or directly with the college with inquiries about these courses.
